OUR HISTORY

On the Feast of St. Bartholomew in 1917, Archbishop George Mundelein established St. Bartholomew Parish. The United States had entered World War I five months before the appointment of St. Bartholomew's first pastor. The Reverend William J. O'Shea, a former professor at Quigley Seminary, became pastor on September 3. Without a church building, a school or a rectory, he set about to establish a parish. Father O'Shea proved to be a great pioneer pastor. Eight short weeks after the first Mass, the parishioners gathered for Mass in their own humble church building on November 14, 1917.  St. Bartholomew School was formally opened with 180 pupils on September 6, 1921. The original faculty was composed of four Sisters of St. Dominic from Springfield, Kentucky. They were Sisters Sienna, John Dominic, Leonardo and Angelita.

OUR MISSION

Here at St. Bartholomew School, it is our mission to help your child grow into a lifelong learner, becoming the most extraordinary expression of themselves while recognizing their unique potential. Your student will feel empowered to develop their academic potential becoming lifelong learners in the global classroom. Our supportive learning environment gives your child the confidence to willingly and creatively share their time and talents in service to the world around them. Their catechesis is incorporated throughout the curriculum, school activities, guiding them toward their own encounter with Christ and His church.

St. Bartholomew School is a Catholic elementary school dedicated to the education and formation of students in grades Pre-K to 8th Grade. St. Bartholomew School is a vital active school in the Portage Park neighborhood on the Northwest side of Chicago.

The school --- in collaboration with parents as primary educators and the parish community as faith witnesses --- endeavors to create an educational atmosphere which models the Christ-centered way of learning and living. St. Bartholomew School strives to develop the unique potential of its students in a culturally-diverse setting and to prepare its students with the knowledge, values, attitudes, and skills required for active participation in the contemporary world.

Philosophy of Education
We at St. Bartholomew School believe in Catholic education in a multi-cultural diverse setting which nurtures a Judeo-Christian attitude for the education of the total person --- mind, body and spirit. The purpose of this holistic education is to continue the life preparation of the students in their goal of becoming responsible members of the Catholic Church and citizens of the United States of America in the 21st century. We provide opportunities for developing leadership qualities in the students enabling them to become living, active members of the People of God, carrying on the mission of Christ in His Church, as well as good citizens of the United States of America in the 21st century.

We believe that the students and faculty are partners in learning. Through our educational programs, we foster parent awareness of student progress, strive to create and enhance in each individual positive self-concepts, incorporate aspects to value education, teach the basic skills, and augment skills of critical thinking and self-direction necessary to function in future society as a contributing person.
The students of St. Bartholomew School are separate individuals who approach the world of learning with various levels of development, natural ability, and backgrounds. Hence, they learn in different ways. Every student is able to learn and pursue excellence to his/her greatest level of achievement. We believe in the utilization by the teacher of a variety of learning methods to benefit the individual needs of the student-as-learner and teacher-as-learner; that discipline is based on self-respect, a concern for others, and a display of Christian living; and to prepare the students for further education thus enabling them to achieve personal goals. The students are expected to participate in the learning process appropriate to their developmental levels.
